Two-city adventure

Paris and Amsterdam: A Relaxed Nine-Day Itinerary

Two contrasting cities can make a satisfying trip without a long list of hotel changes. This suggested nine-day plan uses four nights in Paris and four in Amsterdam, with the journey between them treated as part of the trip.

Suggested allocation, not a package. Departure is the following day after the final night.

01

Days 1–4: settle into Paris

Make the first day an easy arrival day: check in, find somewhere nearby to eat and get your bearings. Use the next three days for a mix of a museum or major sight, a neighbourhood walk and slower time by the Seine. Avoid stacking several timed admissions on the same day. Choose the places that interest you rather than trying to complete a universal must-see list.

02

Day 5: move between cities

Compare transport for your actual dates and check the arrival point before choosing your Amsterdam accommodation. Allow for station or airport transfers and luggage. Keep this day lightly planned: an evening walk or a flexible dinner is easier to adapt than a prepaid afternoon tour. Timetables, disruption and booking windows vary, so confirm the journey with the operator.

03

Days 6–8: explore Amsterdam at your pace

Split your full days between an art or history interest, canal-side neighbourhoods and unstructured exploring. Popular museums may require advance reservations; check their own booking pages rather than assuming walk-in entry. Leave room for the weather and for breaks. If you add a day trip, count its transport time as well as the time at the destination.

04

Day 9: a calm departure

Check the checkout time and how early you need to reach your departure point. If you have several hours free, luggage storage can make a final walk easier. Confirm storage opening hours and allow time to retrieve your bags. An early departure is a reason to keep the morning empty, not to squeeze in a final paid activity.

05

Adjust the balance

Prefer museums and longer meals? Add a night in Paris. Prefer a slower single-base trip? Choose just one city and give it the whole week. The route preview is a planning suggestion, not a package or a promise of availability. Review dates, room occupancy and total group cost when making individual bookings.

06

Give each full day its own neighbourhood

In Paris, make one day about a museum and the Seine, another about Montmartre and a slower lunch, and another about whichever part of the city interests you most. In Amsterdam, separate a museum-focused day from a canal-and-neighbourhood day. These are alternatives to adapt, not a list you need to finish.

  • Choose between major museums rather than stacking several into one day.
  • Keep a rainy-day indoor option in reserve.
  • If a timed ticket matters to you, check it before locking in the rest of that day.
07

Rail belongs in the comparison

Eurostar offers the Paris–Amsterdam route between city-centre stations. Compare the departure you can actually book against your other options, including the time to reach each terminal. Do not plan from an advertised headline journey time alone.

One last check

Before you book

  • Stay in Paris on nights 1–4 and Amsterdam on nights 5–8.
  • Keep day 5 clear of tight timed bookings.
  • Confirm arrival station or airport before choosing transfers.
  • Reserve any essential museum slot before filling the rest of the day.

A few useful answers

Can I shorten this to a week?

Yes. Use three nights in each city for seven calendar days, moving on day 4. That gives you two full sightseeing days in each place; use our one-week guide for the shorter rhythm.

Should I add Brussels as a third overnight stop?

Only if it is a priority for you. Adding another checkout and transfer changes the relaxed nature of this plan. You can also save Brussels for a separate trip.
